The Fannie D. Lowry Memorial Library on North Main Street in Jefferson was dedicated on May 18, 1986. The oldest home in Jefferson, the Michael Miller house was donated to the Jefferson Library Association in 1983 by William Lindsay Raley, one of Miller's descendents, with the stipulation that it be restored and used as a library to be named for his aunt, Fannie D. Lowry. The house began as a simple frame structure of heart pine, built by one of Jefferson's first settlers, Michael Miller, in the early 1800s. The floors are of wide planks and set with hand-forged nails. The original locks and hinges are still in place on the heavy paneled doors. The Fannie D. Lowry Memorial Library with its quirky floors, original hardware, and stunning fireplace mantels is a much loved and much used facility for the Jefferson community.
